Being a microblading artist isn’t just about drawing on eyebrows or making plump lips look plumper. Not only are you the artist—you’re also the teacher. In fact, many clients will throw you the same questions over and over again. Here are all the answers you’ll need for your future clients’ frequently asked questions about microblading.
1. Is microblading safe?
Microblading is a perfectly safe procedure in the hands of a trained professional. As with all beauty treatments, microblading carries a certain degree of risk. This is why clients must rigorously follow the pre-microblading and post-microblading instructions given by the artist.
There are also certain clients who are not eligible for microblading. Microblading is not safe for clients with the following conditions:
- Post-inflammatory hypopigmentation
- Skin diseases
- Transmittable blood diseases (e.g. HIV, hepatitis)
- Extremely oily skis
- Allergies to numbing agents
Additionally, microblading is not safe for clients undergoing chemotherapy, pregnant clients, and underage clients.
Here are other reminders to ensure client safety:
- Never accept a microblading artist who is not licensed or who has no certifiable training.
- Do not patronize a microblading clinic that does not have the proper operating licenses.
- Do not patronize a microblading clinic that has no sanitation certifications.
2. Is microblading painful?
The pain level for microblading is mild to none, depending on the sensitivity of the client’s skin. Microblading artists apply a topical anesthetic before the procedure to ensure the client’s comfort. The sensation felt during microblading is often compared to the discomfort felt during tweezing or threading.
That being said, there are certain special conditions regarding microblading and pain:
- Clients on their period may experience more discomfort. We recommend microblading procedures for when clients are not on their period.
- Topical anesthetics’ effects may not last as long for frequent smokers. They are also retained poorly by the body.
- Clients with fibromyalgia may also experience more discomfort than other clients.
3. How long will the pigments last?
The longevity of the pigments depends heavily on the type of pigment used, the consistency of touch-ups, and the post-care provided to the microbladed area. Generally, microblading pigments can last from 1 to 3 years. Organic microblading pigments are known to last for up to two years.
4. How long does the procedure last?
The procedure can last anywhere from 1 to 3 hours, depending on the microblading artist.
5. What happens during the procedure?
The microblading artist leads a discussion with the client over their preferences. The artist also analyzes the area and provides suggestions about shape, shade, etc.
Once the client has decided on the look they want to go for, the artist does a mock-up of the final product by using temporary makeup.
After the client’s approval, the artist applies a topical numbing cream to prepare them for the procedure. When the numbing cream has taken effect, the artist then proceeds with the actual microblading procedure.
The artist uses a specialized microblading tool that makes incisions on the client’s skin. The tool also deposits the ink pigment on their skin.
After the procedure, the artist provides the client with detailed aftercare instructions, as well as schedules a touch-up appointment.
5. Do I really need to come back for a touch-up?
Yes, clients need to return for touch-ups. Normally, microblading artists will ask clients to return after a month or so. This touch-up also serves as a check-up for the microbladed area. Afterward, clients need only to come back once a year for retouches.
6. Can I get my ___ microbladed while I’m pregnant or nursing?
We do not recommend microblading for pregnant or nursing clients. There aren’t yet any studies to prove that microblading pigments are not harmful to the fetus or breastfeeding babies.
7. Is it safe to get my eyebrow tattoo microbladed over?
Not all tattooed eyebrows can be microbladed over. A microblading artist will likely ask to see the eyebrow in person or in photos before they agree to perform microblading.
Tattooed eyebrows which are too dark or whose ink deposits go deep will likely not be eligible for microblading.
8. Is microblading safe for my skin type?
Different microblading clinics use different pigments. To ensure safety, clients should inquire about the pigment beforehand and alert the microblading artist about any allergies or conditions.
The client is also encouraged to conduct their own research about the pigment used by a clinic.
Clients are also advised to seek clinic using organic pigments, which are made with natural ingredients and are less risky than any other microblading pigment.
9. How do I know what color my eyebrows should be?
Microblading artists will provide suggestions depending on the client’s skin color.
For curious clients, the Fitzpatrick scale may be used to determine skin type. Most microblading and other cosmetic clinics use the Fitzpatrick scale to help choose an eyebrow color for clients.
10. What happens after the procedure?
Immediately after the procedure, there will be redness in the microbladed area. The deposited pigment will also appear darker. Both of these are normal during the healing period.
The healing process takes 7 to 14 days. At this point, there will also be light scabbing in the area. It is essential that clients do not pick at the scabs.
After two weeks, the color will have a milky, opaque quality. This phenomenon is called “milk skin” and is common to all tattoos.
Microbladed eyebrows will lighten by up to 40% during the healing period. The true color settles and reveals itself one month after the microblading procedure.
When writing an FAQ page or addressing client questions, keep in mind the following:
- Be honest. Clients who are truly interested in microblading will have already done their research. They only want to hear you confirm what they saw on the internet. Lying to them about any part of the procedure will only break the trust between you and the client.
- Keep answers concise. Don’t waste a client’s time with sales talk or content fluff. People have short attention spans; if they don’t immediately receive the information they need, they will end up looking elsewhere for answers.
- Stay pleasant. Don’t lose patience with clients. Understandably, they worry about their safety and the value of their money. Provide them with excellent customer service, and they’ll repay you by continuously patronizing your microblading services.
